Here are some helpful tips for successful headshots!
A picture says a thousand words and first impressions do really matter. Whether you are revamping your company website, getting new business cards, or growing your personal brand, professional headshots are crucial to establishing your “know, like, and trust “factor.
Deciding to book your headshot is easy but deciding what to wear is another story! You want to appear professional, yet approachable. Exude confidence but remain relatable. Show who you really ware and be taken seriously.
Here are some of my favorite tips for amazing headshots that you will be proud to flaunt on the internet.
Wear professional Attire:
The first tip for great headshots?
Professional attire. Your clothing should be ironed, steamed, not have wrinkles, etc. Dark colors tend to photograph best, but there are individuals who wear all white and do a great job with it. Accessories are a great way to show off your personality in a professional manner. Avoid branded clothing adorned with logos, writing and illustrations. Not only does this type of attire provide a professional look, but it also helps you maintain a self-confidence that shines through in your photos.
Still unsure? You are more than welcome to email or message me some pictures of your attire options before the session for help. Some clients bring several outfits and accessories to the appointment and ask for assistance in choosing what will photograph best.
Avoid Busy Patterns and Stripes
You want people to notice you, not your outfit. Busy patterns and stripes conflict with backgrounds and draw attention away from the main subject ~ You! IF you are a trendsetter, all the power to you. Embrace your style but remember to be realistic about how long you would like to use your new photos. Headshots are an investment, and you want to be sure that they are not outdated a year from what you get them.
Flatter your figure:
Wear form-flattering clothes. Clothing that is too loose or too tight can make you look heavier than you are. Embrace your figure. DL Photography can also smooth any insecurities in photoshop~ not that you need it, because you are amazing!!
Color:
Pick a color that flatters your skin tone. Dark colors, blues, and pastels generally photograph best. One big no-no: stay away from neon. Neon colors can throw off the sensor in digital cameras and do no photograph well. The background we will pick will be neutral, and will work with any color, but you want to make sure the colors you choose represent and work well for you!
Hair& Make-up:
A general rule of thumb, you want to look yourself, but feel your best! Over the years, I have found that clients who take the time and invest in having their hair and make-up done love the impact of their new photos. Ladies, if you plan to hire a make up artist, be sure to ask for a “natural” look. Hire a pro that will not cake on layers of makeup.
Be Yourself:
The best tip for getting the headshots you want? Be yourself! There are guidelines for what photographs best, but above all, you want to show who you are and the brand you represent. This means wearing clothing that you feel comfortable in. Now is not the time to try out a new, unfamiliar style. When in double, keep it simple.
